James Reif
Jim was hired by the Upper Darby Police Department in suburban Philadelphia in 1988 and retired in 2020 after 32 years of service. He attended the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and, over the years, worked in the patrol and detective divisions, as well as mountain bike, plain clothes, SWAT, and anti-graffiti units. He was promoted to sergeant in 1995, lieutenant in 2013, and then to captain in 2016, where his first assignment was as the Commanding Officer of the Training & Professional Standards Unit, and eventually the Commanding Officer of the Patrol Division until his retirement.

Jim was the Upper Darby Township Safe Schools Coordinator, supervising active shooter training, drills, facility assessments, and table-top exercises for the township's 13 public schools and 7 private and parochial schools, as well as numerous pre-K and private businesses. Jim was the primary liaison between the police department and the Director of Security for the 13 public schools, along with the principals of the private and parochial schools in the township.
Jim has extensive experience when it comes to lockdowns, supervising actual lockdown situations from start to finish. The most important learning tool was his post-lockdown evaluations and assessments, which produced a list of lessons learned and best practices in order to improve lockdown procedures. It is these real-life experiences that make Jim's presentations stand out from the rest.

Jim earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety Administration in 2016 from Neumann University, and throughout his career has attended numerous advanced law enforcement schools, including Active Shooter Threat Instructor from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Law Enforcement Active Shooter Emergency Response Instructor from the LSU/NCBRT Academy of Counter-Terrorism Education, Homeland Security Terrorist Prevention & Deterrence School, FBI Executive Leadership Institute, Penn State Police Executive Development Program, and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) Command and Leadership Academy.

Jim has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Upper Darby Police Officer of the Year, Upper Darby Police Employee of the Year, the Upper Darby Education Association Friends of Education Award, and has been inducted into the Upper Darby High School Wall of Fame and the Drexel Hill Middle School Wall of Heroes.

Jim has been married for 32 years and he and his wife have three children, all of whom have chosen careers in public service. His eldest son is a Lieutenant in the US Navy, his daughter is a NICU nurse, and his youngest son is a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army.

In his spare time Jim works as an NCAA Division 1 football referee for the American Athletic Conference and is an assistant coach with the Penn State Brandywine baseball program.
